SCHOOLCHILDREN enjoyed some hands-on experience at the Dorset Skills Festival.

Pupils from Budmouth Technology College and the Wey Valley School and Sports College tried cooking, painting, stonemasonry and other skills at Canford Park Arena near Poole.

Some 8,000 young people will visit the three-day event which features more than 100 stalls offering information on college courses as well as apprenticeships.

Weymouth College showed off courses ranging from childcare to stonemasonry while Kingston Maurward exhibited a host of horticultural stalls.

An army band entertained in the exhibition marquee and a career as an army musician was one of the many jobs being discussed. Charlotte Andrewartha, 14, who was visiting from Wey Valley School, had her hair styled and received advice on hairdressing apprenticeships with Paragon Skills For Industry.

She said: “This is a fantastic opportunity.

“I want to be a dancer but I want to keep my options open, and there’s lots of stalls that have interested me.”
