RAF – Is it right for you?: Today at the skills festival in Poole I found many career opportunities interesting. However, one struck me as the most intelligent decision I could ever make.

I spoke to Andy Rolston, a flight lieutenant. He enjoys his job and is very enthusiastic to wake up the youth of Dorset to the amazing career offers and satisfaction of the RAF.

He is based in the Portsmouth and Bournemouth Armed Forces career offices, where information is free to anyone interested. He joined the Air Force in April 2003, and after a few months completed his training and is now the admin officer. This is his success story.

He has achieved 10 GCSEs and 3 A Levels and 1 degree. Despite this being a help to following his chosen career path, he assured me that you can join with practically no qualifications!

He came to this festival to promote the interesting lifestyle of a career in the Air Force. There is versatility, and a variety of different paths to follow. Mr Rolston says the best part of his job is meeting different people everyday and the parts he doesn’t like… don’t exist at all.

He loves being able to say that he defends is country, and is part of the anti terrorism campaign. He supports overseas anti terrorism too.

To anyone who is interested in this career, he has good advice. If you are over 13, join the air cadets, which give a real taste of the adventure of this job. If you are older, and you are really serious about joining, contact your local careers office and research online.

He says he thinks this festival is a brilliant idea because us, as young people, get to speak to people with different careers. And if you ask the right questions, you get honest answers.

He joined at the age of 21, and will never regret his choice of career.
