Today at the annual Skills Festival in Poole, Dorset, Many career options and opportunities came to light, many of which the year 10 students of Dorset had never even considered.

The Health and Social zone was an extremely popular area, which captured the attention of many year 10’s. The activities included: Preparing and making baby milk formula, nappy changing, cradling and comforting electronic babies and resuscitation and hand washing.

We spoke to Weymouth College student Holly Spiller about her job and what she made of the skills festival.

Holly is a student based and studying at Weymouth College who studying Health and Social care since September 2007. Holly will finish her hopefully finish her studying at around May, June or July in 2009.

Holly is here at the skills festival to promote child and Health and Social care. She also wants to show the younger generation the different skills involved by giving demonstrations on the activities mentioned above.

We thought the activities were very interesting and it has definitely made us consider taking up a career in it in later life.

Holly found herself interested in Health and Social care and hasn’t looked back since.

She told us “The best thing about Health and Social care are the First Aid aspects, The workload however is very difficult. I am currently studying for an OCR and hope to complete it next year. Holly’s advice for young budding Health and Social care workers is “Go for it, the skills are needed and great to learn”.

Holly thinks the Skills festival is great for young people such as young Stuart and yourselves as you get to see the different skills from different careers and people and students can see all aspects of all courses and we totally agree with her!
