A NATIONAL charity based in Dorchester has been awarded a £9,000 Lottery grant to help its work around the country.

Founder Ian Stuart said the money means the Cavernoma Alliance UK charity – formerly the Angioma Alliance UK – will be able to establish regional hubs in 10 major towns and cities across England and Scotland led by medical experts.

Dr Stuart, who has the condition in which abnormal cells in the brain and spinal cord cause bleeding and a range of symptoms, runs the charity from his St Helen’s Road home.

He said: “This grant from Awards for All is really good news. We will be able to have 10 hubs that will be fully independent offshoots of the London forum with three meetings at each site. We hope to begin at Sheffield in January.”

Cavernomas are found in one in 680 people.

Symptoms range from none to seizures, stroke-like symptoms, haemorrhages and headaches.

Dr Stuart and volunteer Dave Watts are still seeking funding, and welcome donations and organisers willing to hold events.
