Dozens evacuated as homes are flooded in Weymouth

DOZENS of people were evacuated when several inches of floodwater filled their homes in Weymouth.

A total of 18 houses in Rowan Close, Southill, were affected by the flood, which destroyed Christmas presents under people’s trees and electrical goods, a fire service spokesman said.

Fire Incident Commander Nigel Shearing, of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, said the rainstorm he had seen in the early hours of the morning was the heaviest he had seen.

Ambulance crews also assisted in the evacuation of elderly and young residents and Dorset Police Community Support Officers helped to secure people’s homes.

Shops in Radipole Lane were also flooded when a river at the back of a property broke its banks and travelled through its garden and across the road.

The flooding, which was first reported at around 7.30am this morning began to rapidly subside at around 10am.

Fire crews continued to pump floodwater from particularly waterlogged back gardens and put sandbags in place ready for any further downpours.

Portland United’s home match against Blandford this afternoon is off due to waterlogged pitch.

Feel sorry for those people affected, but that just illustrates the folly of building so close to water that is hidden beneath the ground, i.e. an arm of Radipole Lake. It's not the first time the shops have been flooded and the car park area is prone to it in winter because the lake runs beneath it.

(1) How deep was the water here following the Martinstown deluge of 1955?

(2) Did the architect/council planning take note of this before Rowan Close was built?

(3) How far above spring high water mark is North Quay?

(4) When is the next high tide?

Is this Question Time Dong? :-)

(1) much deeper than today as it almost washed away Radipole Bridge (see also pic on BBC website)

(2) only in that they stuck a culvert in that doesn't do much when we have downpours, i.e. it makes no difference.

(3) a bit higher

(4) twice each day

Terra Firma's question: Nope, as they had already been removed I think. It gets very muddy in that part of the copse when it rains so imagine them sliding onto their rears with a bump instead....they'd really look a swampy mess then ;-)

Is that the end of the quiz?
