MORE than 200 businesses from across Dorset have received top-level advice on how to beat the recession – thanks to a series of free seminars staged by Business Link.

Called How To Grow Your Business... Whatever The Market Conditions, the three events in Bournemouth, Portland and Christchurch were aimed at helping small and medium-sized companies expand and prosper despite the tough economic conditions.

Business Link’s economic development manager for Dorset, Matthew Butcher, who introduced the seminars, described them as among the most popular in recent years.

Each event featured vital recession-busting advice from Peter Czapp, director of Andover-based The WOW Company, as well as a chance to network and exchange ideas.

“There was a lot of audience participation and everyone came away having learned something and also having made useful contacts,” said Matthew. “We’ve had really positive feedback.

“The businesses were very diverse and came from right across the county – there were website designers, life coaches and retailers. At one seminar we even had a business that re-enacts historic battles for television.

“It was interesting to hear how these businesses are coming up with innovative marketing ideas to retain customers and win new ones in the current climate.

“A lot are using web-marketing and social networking sites to get their message across.”

The seminars are the latest staged by Business Link to help Dorset businesses combat the recession. Business Link’s next event, titled Real Help, Right Here, Right Now, will take place at the Royal Bath Hotel, Bournemouth, on May 12, between 8.20am and 12.40pm.

The event, which will be followed by a buffet lunch and networking opportunity until 2pm, will offer advice, information and support on topics ranging from cashflow to marketing. Business owners and managers will also get the opportunity for one-to-one sessions with Business Link’s experienced advisers.
