ROBBERS attacked a pensioner from behind in broad daylight and stole £80 cash in Weymouth.

Police said the 69-year-old man was hit on the back of the neck in Shrubbery Lane in Wyke Regis at around 5.30pm.

The attackers then fled with £80 as he lay helpless on the floor.

PC David Frampton said the victim was walking home when he was approached from behind and struck on the back of the neck, causing him to collapse.

PC Frampton added: “While the man was prone on the pavement, the cowardly offenders stole £80.

“The victim believes more than one person may have been responsible.

“The victim only received minor scratches to the face as a result of this robbery, however he is understandably shocked and upset.”

Residents reacted with horror after learning of the attack on August 7, describing Wyke Regis as a usually ‘a peaceful place’ to live.

John and April Lee, who retired to Westhill Close after running the Warwick Court guest house on Weymouth Esplanade for 24 years, said they will now take extra care on the streets.

John, 80, said: “I’m shocked because this sort of thing does not happen around here.

“It makes you wonder if it’s safe to leave your door open any more.”

April added: “I usually keep my handbag in my shopping bag as a deterrent to thieves any way but I will be taking extra care now.”

Retired secretary and Shrubbery Lane resident Verna Robinson, 85, was shocked to learn of an attack in her street.

She said: “I’m very surprised because it’s a particularly early time of day.

“I’ve lived here since 1990 and it’s normally a very peaceful place.”

She added: “I shan’t let it affect me and I’ll still go about my business as usual but it is very surprising.”

Neil and Michelle Warner, who have run the store in Wyke Square for the last three years, also expressed their surprise.

Michelle said: “It’s disgusting and despicable to attack an old person like that.”

Neil added: “The worst thing is that it’s happened in broad daylight and in the early evening in Wyke Regis.”

Ward councillor Doug Hollings described the attack as a ‘sad indictment’ on the nature of society.

He said: “I’m sure I speak on behalf of every decent, honest resident in Wyke Regis when I say I am appalled by this.

“That a crime like this can happen in such a quiet, pleasant place as Shrubbery Lane is shocking and it’s a sad indictment if that is the state that society has now reached.”

PC Frampton said no description of the attackers was available. He added: “I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this robbery and anyone with information about those responsible, to contact me.”
