WORK has begun at the site of a long-awaited place of worship in Poundbury.

The Poundbury Quiet Space promises to offer a ‘centre of tranquillity’ in Prince Charles’s model development for people of all religions to enjoy.

After years of planning, members of Dorchester’s church community met up with representatives from the Duchy of Cornwall and Morrish Builders to see the foundations laid down for the eagerly anticipated building.

When the project is finished, the land behind the Duchy of Cornwall offices will feature a space for relaxation and religious reflection, a furnished quiet room, kitchen, areas for discussion and a tranquil garden.

The Quiet Space will be run by a charitable trust with representatives from all those churches involved in the Churches Together in Dorset group.

When the centre is complete it will be open to all comers every weekday from 10am to 4pm and will also be available for activities run by the churches involved.

It will be staffed by volunteers and the trust will also be looking to appoint a warden.

Chair of the trust, Canon Harold Stephens, said: “Setting up and operating The Quiet Space will take time, money, energy and, most importantly, a core group of dedicated volunteers.
