AN HONEST schoolgirl who handed in cash she found in the street has been rewarded by being handed it back – after a six-month wait.

Jasmine Johnson, 10, found £15 on the ground outside HSBC in Weymouth town centre and instead of heading to the nearest shop to spend it she took it inside to the cashiers.

No one collected the money in the six months after the Holy Trinity schoolgirl handed it in so the bank contacted her mother Joanne Johnson to ask if Jasmine could come back and collect it.

Mrs Johnson said she hoped that it would illustrate that the majority of youngsters are trustworthy.

Mrs Johnson, 36, from Preston Road, said: “She’s always very honest about everything, so it was not a big surprise.

“You might have expected her to say ‘great, straight to the toy shop’ but she’s a good girl so she didn’t.

“My 17-year-old daughter is saying ‘I wouldn’t have done it.’ Mrs Johnson said Jasmine was leaving the bank with a friend and her mother when she spotted the money and took it back in to say someone had dropped it.

She added: “They said it was very honest of her and took her address and telephone number and told her if no one collects it in six months it’s hers.

“I forgot about it until I got a phone call to say the six months is up and would Jasmine like to come down to collect it.”

Jasmine said she knew to take the money straight back as soon as she saw it.

She said: “We were right next to the bank so I took it in straight away.

“I am pleased to get the money but somebody must have dropped it by mistake.”

Jasmine is not keeping it all to herself though.

“I’m going to give half of it to my friend Rosie because she was with me in town,” she added.

“I think I might use the rest to help buy a Wii computer game.”
