Paedo march: Angry protesters call for action

PROTESTERS chanting ‘paedos out’ marched through Weymouth town centre in a bid to rid the resort of child abusers.

Passers-by flocked to join the anti-paedophile rally as it brought the shopping streets to a standstill on Saturday.

A police escort stopped the traffic on Weymouth Esplanade as the 50-strong group called for paedophiles living in the borough to be named and shamed.

They handed out t-shirts and leaflets urging people to shop paedophiles – and demanded the introduction of a ‘Sarah’s law’ to give more information about the whereabouts of child sex attackers.

Liz Matthews, 46, from South Road, Wyke Regis, joined the march.

She said: “We’ve come to try and have some sort of effect to make people sit up and be aware that they are here and we need to do something about it to keep our children safe.

“We know they’ve got to live somewhere but not by the seaside where thousands of children come. This is not the place for paedophiles. Weymouth is a family resort. They shouldn’t be here.”

Daniel Riggs, 29, from Fortuneswell, Portland, set up the march amid the furore over convicted paedophile David Payne living in Weymouth.

Payne fled the town after an outcry when it was revealed he lived a short walk from the beach – just a mile from one of his victims.

Mr Riggs gave a speech as the parade began at the Jubilee Clock.

He said: “Even though David Payne has gone they are still housing other sex offenders in the area. Weymouth has a nice beach and seafront and in the summer our children are out here to play.

“We have to put our voices together as a community and say we are not going to stand for this.

“We want Sarah’s Law and to have the right to know if any paedophiles are living in our communities.”

The group asked for a late change of route to allow them to walk through St Mary Street.

The section commander for Weymouth and Portland, Inspector Pete Meteau, agreed to the change.

The march swelled in numbers with whole families donning the campaign t-shirts and joining in.

A police van was again used to stop the traffic as they paraded up Westham Road and back along The Esplanade.

Brothers Darren and John Marsden left their King Street home to join in.

Darren, 22, said: “We were just passing and we had heard about it in the Echo.

“We’ve heard about so many paedophiles lately and people are trying to do something about it. This is a good start. This is a seaside town with plenty of kids so paedophiles should not be here.”

Organisers who set up a group on the social networking website Facebook to rid the town of David Payne also joined the march.

Mum Stacey Broughton, 24, from Southill, set up the group and has a 500-strong petition calling for paedophiles to be driven out of Dorset.

She said: “From talking to people today we’ve been told about more paedophiles in our area from people who’ve done a police check. You can’t go around accusing people but I think we have a right to know as parents.

“If everybody in every town did something then something would be done.”

Michelle Ross, 30, from Wyke Regis, helped set up the internet group. She said: “It’s just made us angry and frightened for our children to realise there are so many sex offenders living in Dorset under our noses.

“The current assessment system is not enough because these paedophiles are re-offending.”

Ah the lynch mobs, stirred up by the money seeking echo.

Tell me, will you be accepting responsibility when an innocent man is killed because he was mistaken for a paedophile?

I can't help but agree. I understand that we all want to protect our children but until everyone read it in the paper they were all oblivious to the whereabouts of this man. I'm pretty sure he's not the only one living here and what are we going to do when this man moves? Move on to the next one? It will be a never ending battle. It's another case of not in our back yard.
I also heard about the case in Portsmouth where the protesters took control of the law and attacked a man for being a 'paedo'. They beat him unconscious on his own drive way and then found out that he was a pediatrician. All they heard was 'pedo'.

Mr Riggs the organiser states, "they are still housing other sex offenders in the area"!

Well come on Mr Riggs name and shame them as you know their wherabouts.

Crazylady: You're mixing your stories, but the sentiment is correct. The baying hate mob was in Portsmouth, the paediatrician forced out of *her* home was in South Wales.
Paedophiles are the very worst scum of society who need to be both punished and monitored, but a march through the town centre's not going to change a thing except whip up unfocused anger.

Can someone please remind this dictionary-starved mob that paediatricians are not to be attacked. Else Weymouth will be the next Portsmouth in the news.

Personally, I'm a paedophobe and proud of it!

Although I agree with the idea of the protest it seems a slight waste of time and really just holding traffic and shoppers going about the buisness. It will not achieve anything. These people will always live somewhere. There is no way of saying to the goverment that they can live anywhere but Weymouth.

Where are the Gallows going to be placed?

The echo is embarking on dangerous territory and I wouldn't be surprised if we see some innocent people hurt as a result - many people in Weymouth are too stupid to realise the difference between a Pedophile and Paediatrician.

Wow 50 people on a Paedo march - what a raging success. Does it really deserve the amount of coverage that this event is getting in the Dorset Echo?

“If everybody in every town did something then something would be done.”
God the naïvety of some of these marchers is truly unbelieveable.

As for Daniel Riggs, I heard him on Five Live at the weekend and the interviewer was able to tie him up in knots with the simplest of questions such as "If the paedophiles aren't going to be in Weymouth where are they going to go?" to which Mr Riggs' considered response "Totally, totally."

"a 500-strong petition calling for paedophiles to be driven out of Dorset."
It would be funny if it was so tragically pathetic and stupid.

"whole families donning the campaign t-shirts and joining in."
Well it's a day out with a difference and keeps the kids off the street. Oh hang on...

As I said earlier, it was in South Wales, but was at the height of the last major bout of paedogeddon whipped up by the press: http://bit.ly/ai2yCs

What a thouroughly loathsome paper the Echo is. Using a subject that requires intelligence, due dilligence and responsible operation and study and turning it into this kind of trashy propaganda.

I bet half of those idiots don't even look after thier own kids properly, sit them in from of a TV or game console and feed them crap etc.

Such problems as these will never be addressed properly all the time mentally retarded plebs like this walk around seeking attention thinking they know what the hell they are talking about.

Pure Jeremy Kyle crap media at it's worst!

P.S

I LOVE the way these "parents" use children so young to March, chant and rage when these little ones have no idea what the hell it is about and probably wonder what all the hysteria is about. Do you think it is responsible parenting to use your very young child in such a way and take them to such stupid displays or group stupidity?

PortlandWilliam, Dorchester says...

So only 50 turned up out of the whole population of the area.
Why is the Echo giving so much space to such a small minority?
The sensible right thinking majority realise that a lynch mob has no place in modern society and their views should be reflected by the paper.

"Pedo protest championed by the Echo gets worldwide recognition and brings peace to the universe and prosperity to the Third World and all ranting minorities"?

No?

Oh well, I just spotted a protest against the protest that was started in protest by protesters protesting against how thier protest was protested against by other protesters because the other protesters felt their protesting was out protested by the original protest.

Dammit, now I'm gonna start a protest !

Paedo Phobia, .. Here is what happens..

.

A businessman is suing British Airways over a policy that bans male passengers from sitting next to children they don't know - even if the child's parents are on the same flight.
.

Mirko Fischer has accused the airline of branding all men as potential sex offenders and says innocent travellers are being publicly humiliated.
.

In line with the policy, BA cabin crew patrol the aisles before take-off checking that youngsters travelling on their own or in a different row from their parents are not next to a male stranger.
.

If they find a man next to a child or teenager they will ask him to move to a different seat. The aircraft will not take off unless the passenger obeys.
.

Mr Fischer, a 33-year-old hedge fund manager, became aware of the policy while he was flying from Gatwick with his wife Stephanie, 30.
.

His wife, who was six months pregnant, had booked a window seat which she thought would be more spacious. Mr Fischer was in the middle seat between her and a 12-year-old boy.
.

Shortly after all passengers had sat down, having stowed their bags in the overhead lockers, a male steward asked Mr Fischer to change his seat.
.

Mr Fischer refused, explaining that his wife was pregnant, at which point the steward raised his voice, causing several passengers to turn round in alarm. He warned that the aircraft could not take off unless Mr Fischer obeyed.
.

Mr Fischer eventually moved seats but felt so humiliated by his treatment that he is taking the airline to court on the grounds of sex discrimination-He is paying all his own legal fees.
.

If he wins at the hearing next month at Slough County Court, BA will have to change its policy.
.

He has promised to donate any compensation to the NSPCC.
.

Mr Fischer, who lives in Luxembourg with his wife and their daughter Sophia, said: 'This policy is branding all men as perverts for no reason. The policy and the treatment of male passengers is absolutely outrageous.
.

'A plane is a public place - cabin crew regularly walk down the aisles and passengers are sat so close to each other. The risk of any abuse is virtually zero.
.

'Furthermore statistically children are far more likely to be abused by a member of their family. Does that mean that BA are going to ban children sitting next to their own parents?'
.
(Take note of that last comment Mr Riggs)

Genghis, Portland says...
6:22pm Mon 1 Feb 10

Stranger danger - yes it's frightening even terrifying to think about. Protecting children is paramount. Unfortunately the headlines dominate on the dangers from the stranger. Fact is though in the majority of child abuse cases it is family members or friends of the family that were the real danger.
