PUPILS have continued to raise money for the Haiti appeal.

Children at Chickerell Primary School turned up for their lessons dressed in red and blue.

The theme of red and blue, the same colours as the Haiti flag, was put forward by Year Six pupil Will Sawtell and a total of £440 was raised.

It was chosen out of a range of ideas that were suggested in assembly after Laura Williams, of Year Four, took in an Echo cutting about the fundraising that had been going on locally.

The majority of the 327 students went in to school dressed in the Haiti colour scheme and made a donation towards the cause.

The money raised will go towards buying a ShelterBox for the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

Teacher Wendy Simmonds said there had also been other fundraising events going on in the school.

She said: “Children have been doing all sorts, from raffles and making and selling badges.

“All the children have responded brilliantly and are asking questions and really taking an interest.

“It’s important for them to be aware of what’s going on and for them to be doing something themselves to help.”

Children at Bovington Middle School also stepped out to raise money for emergency aid. They raised more than £1,500 with a sponsored three-mile sponsored walk to Moreton led by teacher Tim Maley and with a non-uniform day and cake sales.

Some of the money is supplying a Shelterbox through Rotary.

Headteacher Keith Sutton said: "It's a great effort by everyone. Fundraising is continuing at the school."

Rotarians have continued to collect money. Members stood a fairground style organ in New Bond Street in Weymouth town centre over the weekend to boost the coffers.

Mister Chips in Weymouth is collecting for the Haiti appeal. Graeme Fernie, who is owner of the fish and chip shop in Lennox Street, has kickstarted the collections with £20.

Staff will be putting the contents of their tips jar in as well.

A collection for disaster stricken Haiti has reached £4600 in Shaftesbury.
