I have been reading with interest the comments about Weymouth Pavilion.

I live in Jersey and we have been fighting for years for the preservation of our premier family complex, Fort Regent.

If the Jersey States had their way it would be turned into either luxury flats or a hotel, neither of which we desperately need in Jersey.

They closed a perfectly good swimming pool, housed in the Fort, which was used regularly by several local swimming clubs and other members of the public, for no other reason that to justify the opening of an Aqua Splash pool at the then new Waterfront development.

This has since proven to be a big mistake. Fort Regent also houses a fantastic gym, squash courts, badminton hall, dance studios, pool tables and various rooms for aerobic, karate, step and other similar classes, all of which are in constant use by the public.

We also have a concert hall for various shows/visiting artistes, and a cafe with children’s play arena.

This is the sort of thing you need in Weymouth and I think the Pavilion could be put to good use in this way.

An internet cafe would also keep youngsters off the streets.

As a regular visitor to Weymouth and indeed, I am hoping to re-locate to the area in the near future, I think there is a definite need for a Community Centre which is within easy reach of the town centre, for both locals and visitors alike.

This is particularly so with the 2012 Olympic Games looming, which will attract more people to spend a holiday in the area.

I feel that Weymouth Pavilion could be turned into such a centre, even if it means adding a further building to the existing one.

After all, more people are having holidays at home these days, and you need somewhere like this for people to visit when the weather is poor.

Whatever you do, please do not stop fighting to stop its closure. Common sense will prevail in the end.
