Weymouth and Portland Council, wake up and smell the coffee!

I refer to the story ‘Tight leash on new dog rules’ (Echo, February 3).

So, what has happened to good old common sense?

No serious dog owner would allow their dog to roam free in certain areas, credit us with some sense.

The majority of us who clean up after our dogs are just as appalled as the council and non-dog owners over this.

I cannot wait to see the dog warden patrolling Weymouth beach in the summer. So, if dogs love to swim? They can’t? Perhaps the warden will wade in and pull them out?

I've met many visitors who come to Weymouth because their dogs can use the beach - so goodbye to them then.

Here are a few more ideas the council might like to consider: 1. Close the beach to the public in the summer, save on beach cleaning and life guards.

2. Convert the Pavilion to a dog training school for wayward dogs and owners. Attendance should be compulsory after receiving as ASBO.

3. Ban all boats from the harbour, therefore no harbour wall re-building is necessary.

4. Review car park charges in town, and make it so expensive that the majority of shops will have to close down (wait, that seems to be already happening - were we really the only Dorset town that didn’t allow free Xmas parking?).

5. Alternatively, make the car parks free and redeploy the traffic wardens as dog wardens - dogs are more important than cars.

6. Close the council offices and convert it to a dog pound.

7. Issue a local bylaw that you must only use council-issued leads and collars that comply with the length of leash allowed.

8. Issue the new dog wardens (see 5 above) with new council tape measures to enable the easy measuring of dog leashes.

9. Raise council tax by 50 per cent and let the whole town move to Australia or the USA, where people are made to feel important.

It is obvious there is a Government mandate which explicitly states ‘never listen to your public, just let them pay your way out. Keep making unbelievable local bylaws and don’t allow them any freedom. At all times show no common sense and treat the tax payers as morons."

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, Gordon is proud of you. I'm not.

God bless free speech, wait, oh no, another bylaw amendment?
