Portland teenager Adam Greaves is gearing up for a tri-mile charity challenge on Portland with dozens of other youngsters from across the borough.

The fancy-dress fundraiser will be taking place on Saturday, March 13, in aid of Sport Relief.

It is hoped that young sailors from clubs across Weymouth and Portland will take part in the ‘SailLaser Tri-mile’, which involves a three-mile course of a run, swim and sail.

Hosted by SailLaser’s OnBoard and Race Sailing clubs at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, the multi-disciplined event is open to all children aged seven to 15 years old.

Adam, 13, of Southwell, Portland, will be teaming up with his friend Ross McFarlane, also 13, and dressing up as ‘shipwrecked people’.

Wearing wetsuits and fancy dress, competitors will run a mile from the academy to Bluewater Horizons boat yard along Portland Beach Road, swim to waiting Pico dinghies and then sail back to SailLaser through a course in Portland Harbour.

Sailing enthusiast Adam, who has been overwhelmed with opportunities since winning a scholarship through the Chesil Trust’s Sail for £5 scheme, is keen to give something back to others though the charity challenge.

Mum Mandy Greaves said: “Adam’s had a lot of opportunities in the past few years with money donated by the Chesil Trust for his Level one and two courses.

“Then further sailing qualifications were paid for by a man in Lymington who was impressed by Adam raising money for other youngsters.

“He’s had opportunities to meet Prince Philip during the Queen’s visit and he met the Prime Minister as well, so it’s time to raise some money for someone else. Adam’s already been out training.

“If anyone wishes to sponsor Adam for this event, donations of any amount will be gratefully received for Sport Relief.”

The event is free but organisers hope the children’s fundraising efforts will raise £1,000.

All the money raised for Sport Relief is spent by Comic Relief to help disadvantaged people to turn their lives around.
