DADS took centre stage for a bit of fun with their children at a specially organised day.

They proved themselves dedicated dads, uncles, grandads and foster carers when they took on some unusual challenges for a Dads’ Fun Day at St Osmund’s Middle School in Dorchester.

The day, organised by Dorset County Council’s Sure Start unit, was designed to give dads and their children a chance to enjoy time out together while taking part in fun activities.

Children aged up to eight and their male relatives turned their hand to a number of activities including drumming, cookery, sports, crafts, toys and games.

The second annual fun day cost £1 each for all participating families.

Council spokesman Jonathan Slater said: “There were about 240 families there – about the same amount as last year.

“We were very pleased with the turnout and we got good feedback from people. It went very well.”

Among the most popular activities were chalk carving, fossil-hunting demonstrations from the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Team and Dorset Fire and Police demonstrations.

Police headgear was available for youngsters to try on for size and there was also a zebra crossing to practise Highway Codes.

Some four-legged upholders of the law were even on hand to say hello – Dorset Police dogs wandered round the site with their handlers.

The South West Ambulance Service ran a colouring competition and offered blood pressure checks for adults.

The birds of prey flying display – courtesy of Liberty’s Raptor and Reptile Centre in Ringwood – proved popular with the children.

Bugs, scorpions, snakes, snails and spiders were on show for the more adventurous. Indoor activities on offer included drumming workshops and the Tree-house Theatre.

Information was also on hand about Dorset Library Service, the Toy Library and other children’s organisations.

Dorchester Mayor Susie Hosford lent her support to the event.

Fathers’ outreach worker Jonny Hoskins said: “We put on events throughout the year for parents and children but fathers often feel left out.

“This event helps us to put out the message that fathers are very important in their children’s life and are always welcome at their local children’s centre.”
