A BUSY road link across the River Avon is to be closed to traffic for up to six months from July so a dangerously rusting bridge can be replaced.

The Avon Causeway bridge near the B3347 junction has been gradually deteriorating and now has to replaced before it collapses.

Many commuters use the Avon Causeway and closure is certain to increase congestion in Christchurch.

But Dorset County Council says there is no option.

As a safety measure, the old iron bridge has recently been subject to a temporary weight limit of 7.5 tonnes.

A county spokesman said the bridge is "generally in poor condition with severe corrosion" in many areas.

Limited clearance between the water and its underside have ruled out any chance of tackling repairs from below.

In addition, parapet improvements cannot be done without building a heavier deck.

"Even then, there is no guarantee this weight increase could be carried on the existing bridge supports," he said.

"The combination of all these factors makes strengthening of the bridge unviable and the decision has been made to replace the bridge in its entirety."

A planning application has been submitted and consultation is under way.

County highway structures manager Mike Flatters said the closure would have a significant effect on many people.

"The existing bridge is in very poor condition and could represent a danger to the public if these essential works are not undertaken soon," he said.

The cost of the new bridge will be around £700,000.

Plans have been put in place to lessen the environmental impact. Hurn county councillor David Fox said he was sure "replacement is the right answer".

"However, in view of the rural nature of the Causeway, I know that the residents of Hurn will be relieved that the weight restriction is to be made a permanent feature," he said.
