STUART Cannie's double strike at Fareham was enough to help Wimborne Town maintain the pressure on the leaders in the Division One of the Wessex League.

Cannie's second-half salvo crowned an impressive Magpies show after Stuart Cooper had opened the scoring in the first half.

The result keeps the men from Cuthbury handily placed in third and despite the fact they have played considerably more games than most of the sides around them, assistant manager John Macey insists he'd rather be in his side's position right now.

He said: "You would always rather have the points on the board as you never know what's around the corner with injuries and suspensions.

"We have to just keep going along quietly as we have been and keep playing the way we have been. We can't worry about the other sides, they can sort themselves out and let's see what they can do."

With manager Paul Arnold laid up at home with a bad hip, his deputy Macey was able to enjoy a reasonably straightforward afternoon in charge.

Cooper was quickest to react from a Marcus Oldbury corner and tucked away the opener on 41 minutes.

And Cannie was at his lethal best after the break, first gaining half a yard on his marker with a smart turn to thump home the second, then finishing off a quick break 15 minutes from time.

Macey added: "We did very well and if you pick any name off the team-sheet, they contributed to the performance. We scored some great goals and I don't think there was many complaints."
