A DORSET police officer was injured in a crash that claimed the life of an elderly man on the B3347 at Avon on the morning of November 18.

The dead man, who has yet to be named but is thought to be from the Ringwood or Fordingbridge areas, was travelling south from Ringwood towards Christchurch when the accident happened.

His red Volkswagen Golf was first in a collision with an oncoming grey BMW four-wheel-drive on the double bends at Sabines Farm.

The Golf then collided with an unmarked blue Dorset Police Ford Focus also travelling north.

Hampshire Constabulary says the accident happened just after 9am. They were alerted to the incident by Dorset Police at 9.11am.

The 44-year-old police officer, in the Ford, who was on duty at the time, suffered a broken wrist and was taken to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

A 42-year-old Christchurch woman driving the BMW suffered what are thought to be serious injuries and was also taken to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

Ringwood firefighters freed the man's body from the Volkswagen.

Police closed a section of the B3347 from the Avon Causeway junction to Anna Lane, Bisterne, while the scene of the accident was examined and wreckage cleared.

Diversions were set up until the road was re-opened at lunchtime.

Witnesses should contact the Lyndhurst Road Policing Unit on 0845 045 4545 quoting Operation Garlserg.
