WEYMOUTH'S Waterfest is being re-launched to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Volunteers from the Friends of the Motor Vessel Freedom charity stepped in to resurrect the waterborne carnival after it foundered two years ago due to lack of support.

Now they plan to hold the biggest and best Waterfest in the old harbour on September 10 next year in aid of the MV Freedom and water-based charities.

Peter Targett, chairman of the Waterfest committee and skipper and treasurer of the Freedom, said: "Waterfest used to be brilliant. It was such an awful shame that it wasn't held over the past two years.

"We're very pleased to be able to bring it back and intend to make it bigger and better than ever before." He added: "There will be all sorts of events and attractions on the water and on both sides of the harbour.

"We want as many people and charities as possible to get involved as well as businesses to help with sponsorship."

Waterfest was first held in 1994 and the last event was held in 2002.

Organisers cancelled 2003's event because of poor support and this year's also failed to materialise.

The 2005 Waterfest will be held as part of celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of Lord Nelson's victory at Trafalgar in 1805.

It will also coincide with a major sailing championship being held off the South Dorset coast. Mr Targett hopes that attractions will include a tall ship, parade of sail, bungee-jumping, mock pirate battles, sea cadets, groups dancing the hornpipe, bands and diving displays.

Other ideas proposed include a birdman contest, pedalo race, raft race, charity stalls, a navy warship moored in the harbour or bay, a parachute drop, people walking the plank and fireworks.

The event, which is due to start at 2pm, will also include prizes for adults and children in fancy dress.

Proceeds will go towards the MV Freedom charity and such causes as the lifeboat and sea cadets.

The charity takes people with disabilities and learning difficulties and the elderly on the Freedom boat on cruises out of Weymouth.

Anyone with ideas, able to help with sponsorship or wanting to book a charity stall is urged to call Mr Targett on 07976 528054.
