A BIG-HEARTED uncle tackled the Big Apple in aid of the allergy charity that gave his niece hope.

Disabled Christopher Hayman, 44, of Chesil View, Wyke Regis, Weymouth, ran the New York marathon and raised about £700 for the Anaphylaxis Campaign.

The charity supports people with life-threatening allergies and has helped his 18-year-old niece Jenny James who was diagnosed with a nut allergy at eight months old.

Father-of-three Christopher took on the 26-mile challenge despite suffering with left arm palsy since 1997 after a stroke and brain injury.

"I am very lucky to be here," he said. "The doctors told my parents I might not survive."

New York was his eighth marathon. Over the years he has raised thousands of pounds for charities.

He was spurred on by Jenny from Bristol who said: "I am so proud to say that my uncle Christopher ran in the New York marathon to help raise funds to support this worthwhile cause."
