WINGBACK Mark Boyce last night became Steve Johnson's second Weymouth signing.

The 24-year-old Hampton and Richmond defender has agreed terms at the Wessex Stadium until the end of this season.

And the former Watford professional, who impressed against Plymouth Reserves in midweek, could make his full debut at Eastbourne Borough in Conference South tomorrow, 3pm.

Head coach Johnson said Boyce's capture ended a busy couple of days of negotiating.

"I'm delighted Mark has agreed terms and he'll be part of our squad tomorrow," he said.

"He is someone I worked with when I was coach at Watford and since then I've always kept a close eye on his career.

"Mark had a stint with Aldershot for a while and has most recently been at Hampton under Alan Devonshire.

"I know Alan, who is a shrewd judge, rates him highly and I've always been impressed with Mark every time I've seen him. He did well the other night against Plymouth and he is a great addition to the squad.

"Mark is someone who has lots of energy and pace, can get plenty of crosses in and can also play in a few positions. We've got him on good terms and he and his girlfriend will be moving down to the Dorset area from London shortly."

Johnson revealed that he was also discussing terms with former Cardiff City midfielder Leyton Maxwell, who starred in that midweek reserve friendly.

"There's no doubt Leyton has a good pedigree having been on Liverpool's books but there are a few things I need to check out first before we take it further," he said.

"I've spoken to his agent and told him I'm negotiating with Leyton Maxwell and not Alan Shearer. I'm hopeful we can sort something out shortly.

Missed out

"I'm also planning on taking another look at Jamie Gosling in a couple of reserve games."

Johnson has missed out on Hornchurch midfielder Simon Weatherstone who has joined Conference club Stevenage Borough.

"I gave Simon enough time to think over the move but it now seems he has clinched a deal at Stevenage," he said.

"It's a shame but now I have to go out and get the next Simon Weatherstone."

Sussex-based Johnson faces his shortest trip of the season tomorrow when the Terras, who are likely to be unchanged from last week's win at St Albans City, visit the on-form Priory Lane outfit.

He explained: "I live about four miles outside of Eastbourne so tomorrow is pretty much a home game for me. I've been down in Weymouth all week with the wife and children looking at houses because we plan to move down here as soon as possible.

"It's been a really busy week so I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep tonight.

"But I wouldn't have it any other way and I can't wait getting out there tomorrow in what will be another big game for us.

"Eastbourne are going great guns at the moment so it'll be a tough game - but we've got belief in the side now and hopefully we'll get a good result."
