Alfie (15) Lighthouse * Desperately poor remake finds Jude Law smoothing out all the rough and ready edges that made Michael Caine so memorable in the original.

Alien vs Predator (15) Odeon (not Sat, Sun) ** Monster movie icons clash, humans get caught in the crossfire, several get killed, but a tough lady saves the day. Or something like that.

Bad Santa (15) UCI **** Billy Bob Thornton gives Christmas a good stuffing in this edgy anti-Yule tale about the antics of a drunk shopping mall Santa Claus.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (15) UCI, Odeon, ABC *** More of the same should keep the converts happy as Bridget struggles to settle into a proper relationship and finds her attentions wandering away from Darcy and back to Cleaver. Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth star. There's free Ben & Jerry's ice cream for anyone brave enough to turn up to UCI wearing their PJs!

The Cooler (15) UCI (Sun, Tues only) **** William H Macy is splendid in this dark but whimsical comedy about a professional gambler whose lifelong bad run is turned about when he falls in love, Maria Bello and Aledc Baldwin co-star.

De-Lovely (PG) Wimborne Tivoli (from Mon) *** Kevin Kline does well in the lead in this patchy biopic of composer Cole Porter. Ashley Judd, Jonathan Pryce and Keith Allen ably support.

Finding Neverland (PG) UCI (not Sat, Sun), Odeon (not Sat, Sun) ***** Johnny Depp shines as Peter Pan author JM Barrie whose magical encounter with a lively family inspires him to write the children's classic. Kate Winslet, Julie Christie and Dustin Hoffman provide equally excellent support.

Five Children and It (U) UCI (Sat, Sun only), Odeon ** Passable kids' entertainment set in WW1 when a family of children find a grumpy sand fairy (voiced by Eddie Izzard) to entertain them. Kenneth Branagh and Norman Wisdom are among the grown ups.

Garfield (U) UCI, Odeon (Sat, Sun only) ** Bill Murray, who voices Garfield, is the best thing in this disappointing big screen debut for the sardonic moggy.

The Grudge (15) UCI, ABC *** Passable shocker with Sarah Michelle Gellar as a nurse living in Tokyo where she is exposed to a vicious supernatural curse.

The Incredibles (U) UCI, Odeon, ABC (previews Sat, Sun only) New generation animation from those clever clever Pixar people finds a family of superheroes pressed back into action to save the Earth one more time. Holly Hunter, Samuel L Jackson and Craig T nelson top the voice cast.

Ladies in Lavender (12A) UCI (not Sat, Sun), Odeon (Sat, Sun only), ABC (not sat, Sun) *** Unashamedly melancholic tale about two sisters who saved a stranger; and the stranger who stole their hearts. Maggie Smith and Judi Dench star.

The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (15) Wareham Rex **** Geoffrey Rush sparkles as the tragic comic genius without ever letting the story fade into clich. Emily Watson, Charlize Theron and Stephen Fry offer excellent support.

Metropolis (PG) Lighthouse (Fri only) ***** Fritz Lang's astonishing 1927 vision of the future still stands as one of the greatest films ever made. Shown with live piano accompaniment.

Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement (U) UCI, Odeon (Sat, Sun only) *** Easy but likeable sequel in which Mia finds she has to marry within the next 30 days or lose the throne. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews star.

Shark Tale (U) UCI (Sat, Sun only), Odeon (not Sat, Sun), ABC (Sat, Sun only) *** Patchy animation in which a young fish dreams of hitting the high life but falls foul of the shark mafia. Will Smith, Renee Zellweger and Robert De Niro top the voice cast.

The Terminal (12A) Regent Centre (until Sat), Odeon (Wed only) *** Tom Hanks makes the most of his role as a confused visitor to the USA who is stranded at JFK airport and cannot leave. Catherine Zeta Jones and Stanley Tucci co-star, Steven Spielberg directs.

The Village (12A) Lighthouse (from Sat) **** M Night Shyamalan's creepy twist-in-the-tale story about an isolated community whose homes are surrounded by woodland inhabited by strange creatures. Joaquin Phoenix stars.
