WHEN his mother May (Lindsay Duncan) falls ill, ambitious journalist Kenny (Kevin McKidd) returns home to a close-knit Scottish community to take care of his 21-year-old sister Roberta (Paula Sage), who has Down's Syndrome and has lived at home her entire life.
May is suffering with terminal cancer and does not have long; she is understandably keen to put her affairs in order and make plans for Roberta's future. She entrusts the young woman's safety to Kenny but he is too busy with his career.
Against his mother's express wishes, Kenny makes inquiries about a suitable institution for his sister but the more time he spends with Roberta, the more he realises that once he looks past her condition, he can see a beautiful, talented, funny and vibrant personality deserving of love.
