HAMWORTHY United got their first win of the Wessex League campaign and managed it in some style as they hit lowly Downton for six.

Alex Pike's side strolled into a 3-0 lead after just 28 minutes as two fine strikes from Darren Orchard and a Tom McCormick penalty put them in a commanding position.

There was a 20-minute delay shortly after as a Downton player suffered a broken leg in a 50-50 challenge with Orchard.

But Hamworthy kept their focus in the second period as Karim Banssaouda's glanced home his first goal for the club before Jamie Holland added a late brace.

Pike said: "We weren't scoring enough goals and were struggling to keep clean sheets before this game.

"We have managed to put both of them right so I'm very pleased. But nobody is getting carried away with the result.

"Just because we won this game comfortably and scored some quality goals, we still have a tough season ahead of us. There will be much better teams to play than Downton."

Hamworthy United: Hawkins, Bedward, McCormick (Dronyk, 70), Williams, Gilbert (Rodriguez, 70), Holland, Lucas, Tilley, Edwards (Waldon, 70), Orchard, Banssaouda.

Brockenhurst were held to a goalless draw at Moneyfields but were left to lament spurning some excellent opportunities to have taken all three points from the Portsmouth outfit.

Lee Winsall suffered one of those days as he failed to convert two one-on-ones by the Moneyfields keeper and also struck a post.

Dominic Bryan also hit the upright and with just three minutes to go, substitute Alan Wright skipped past a couple of challenges but was brilliantly denied by the stretching keeper.

Boss Graham Kemp was not too disheartened when he said: "Although it finished 0-0, that was the best we've played so far this season.

"We created a lot of chances but didn't manage to take any of them."

He added: "I think it will be a very tight league this year. A lot of clubs have a genuine chance of doing well."

Brockenhurst: Brunnschweiler, Grace, Morris, G Kemp, Hillyer, White, N Kemp, Marks (Midgeley, 65), Lovell, Winsall (Wright, 75), Drew (Bryan, 65).

Lymington and New Milton slipped to a 3-0 home defeat to the much-improved Bemerton Heath Harlequins while Bournemouth Poppies crashed to a 2-1 reverse at Andover.

Poole Town drew 2-2 at Bishops Waltham in Wessex League Division Two, while Ringwood lost 3-1 at home to Alresford.

Verwood beat Clanfield 3-0 at home in Divsion Three.
