GREAT-grandmother Valerie Kerley spent her 70th birthday enjoying life in the fast lane, on the back of a Harley Davidson - or a Hog to its fans.

The pensioner was treated to a whistle-stop tour of Bournemouth and Poole on the back of the classic bike, organised by her son, Steven Real.

He thought it was the perfect present for his adventure-loving mum, who used to enjoy riding motorcycles in her youth.

Despite initial misgivings from Valerie's husband and daughter, Steven was proved right as his sprightly mum had the time of her life.

Steven, of Southampton, said: "I was so chuffed to see her enjoy it - she just didn't want to stop. I do a bit of racing myself and mum loves watching me scramble. That's what gave me the idea.

"The family thought I was mad but mum's got a daredevil streak and I knew she'd love it.

"Apparently she was on the back saying 'go faster'. It definitely wound the clock back 50 years or so!"

A local biker called Tubbs was only too happy to step in and give Valerie an unforgettable birthday present.

Steven said: "I'm so grateful. I just asked around to see if anyone knew a biker who could help me and Tubbs was suggested right away."

Valerie, of Bowden Road, Alderney, who has four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, has no intention of enjoying a quiet retirement. She spent her 65th birthday in a hot air balloon, again courtesy of Steven, and emerged laughing after it landed badly.

And she still has a luxury trip on the Orient Express to come, courtesy of her daughter, Leah.

She said: "My eldest daughter and husband were worried sick but I absolutely loved it. It was just brilliant.

"The best bit was going along Overcliff Drive because we could get a bit of speed up. I'm tempted to buy a bike now and get rid of the car!"
