A YOUTH club could be created in Poundbury to cater for the development's younger generation.

Youngsters on the estate currently have to travel to the other side of town to use the Dorchester Youth and Community Centre in Kings Road.

But the centre, which operates five days a week, is so popular that it is struggling to cope with demand from young people wanting to join.

Now with the growing population in the west of the town, especially around Poundbury, civic leaders are investigating whether or not a club could be opened in Poundbury.

Teenagers from the prestigious development gathered with youth club leaders in the Brownsword Hall last night to see what sort of facilities could be created for them.

David Barrett, chairman of the Poundbury Youth Action Group, said: "It's a concern to us that the existing, excellent youth club can't cope with any more youngsters, which is why we are looking at what can be done.

"It's not just Poundbury that has a growing younger population - so does Victoria Park and we need to do something sooner rather than later."

He said last night's meeting was organised to give local teenagers and their parents the chance to air their views about what they would like to see created.

"We need something doing and the sooner the better. It would be great if we could replicate what we have in Kings Road in this part of the town."

Leslie Phillips, chairman of the Dorchester Youth Club management committee said: "In the future we hope to be able to organise something on a regular basis in Poundbury for the teenagers of the estate and the surrounding area."

Meanwhile, teenagers at the Kings Road youth club were given an insight into life as a top DJ last night.

Radio One DJ Dan Bailey and Dorchester's own rising star Tim Lyall, a resident DJ at Bournemouth night club Slinky, took time out from their busy schedules to spin a few top tunes for regulars at the club.

Tim, a former Thomas Hardye School pupil, travels all over the world for his work as a dance DJ.
