Steady round for Thornton

CONSISTENCY is what matters in golf and 13 handicapper John Thornton demonstrated just that by recording seven pars in a row to win the Seniors Stableford.

On the second hole of his round - the 162-yard 11th - he sent his drive to within putting distance of the hole but settled for a par three.

Another at the next par four hole was followed by the next of the short holes where he nearly made a two.

He followed that by taming the next two par five holes in regulation shots.

Then came the cliff-top 16th - the second hardest on the course - and John sent his drive almost 200 yards down the centre of the fairway, his second was just as good to the edge of the green, a neat chip, a putt and yet another par.

There was still another to come on the par four 17th, this time another good drive, a seven iron to the flag at the back of the green and two putts. John said: "It's a long time since I played as well. It just felt as though I could do nothing wrong."

He ended the first half with 21 points towards a total of 35. In second place was Ray Roebuck and third was Roy Jackson, both on countback. The second division was won by Gilbert Cuthbert, 39 points followed by Roy Slater, 35, and John Baldry, 34.

*Harry Hedges from Chard and Ian High from Charmouth were in the money on Sunday. Playing together for the first time in the Greensomes competition they picked up £20 each for first prize and two awards of £9 for birdies on the eighth, Ian's putt, and 13th, Harry's putt.

*Mike Scott won the new Saturday Stableford competition with 39 points on countback from Chris Denning with Roger Davis third with 38 points.

*Mike Langford took the Bogey competition with +2 followed by John Broome and David Lock both on +1. The second division was won Jim Dick from Marshwood with +4 followed by Bill Halden +2 and Gerry Donlon +1.

*Ursula Pratt of Colyford made a triumphant return to golf after three years when she won the Ladies Flag competition.

Triumphant not only because she won by making her shots last until the 19th hole but because she was courageously playing with not one but two rebuilt knees!

She was also playing with new clubs converting to ladies clubs after 15 years playing with mens.

"I felt my new knees deserved the lighter set," she said.
