MORE than 600 amateur musicians tuned up their instruments at Weymouth Music Festival.

Children and adults from across Dorset gathered at All Saints' School in Weymouth for the non-competitive event, now in its 17th year.

Professional musicians held classes for the players during the day and music ranged from classical to rock 'n' roll. A woodwind masterclass was held by Colin Touchin, who has taught music at The University of Warwick and Chetham School of Music in Manchester.

Festival chairman Janet Ferrett said: "It went extremely well. About 85 per cent were schoolchildren but there were adults too.

"We had prestigious adjudicators from all over the country who were extremely helpful in the way they inspired and encouraged the musicians. There is a lot of talent out there."

Adjudicators hand-picked the best musicians for a concert to be held at Wey Valley School on Friday.

Music starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £2.
