MORE than 1,000 children took part in a day of sport at the Dorset Youth Games in Blandford.

Schoolchildren aged nine to 15 from around the county were given the opportunity to take part in athletics, cricket, football, rugby, hockey, swimming, tennis and netball at Bryanston School on Saturday.

Each borough within the county had sent around 150 children to take part and they each vied to win the overall games.

Clive Nelson, event organiser, said: "It was to encourage people to get more involved in sports and to encourage them to make links between themselves and clubs. A lot of the officials helping out were from local clubs."

On Friday a separate youth games was held at the school for youngsters with disabilities.
