WEST Dorset people can now have their say about planning matters by logging on to the internet.

They can also use the innovative new web resource to find out if they need council consent to make changes to their home.

The site already offers users the chance to view up-to-date and historical planning applications but now includes a page of new services.

Among these is the opportunity for the public to support, object to or make other comments online about recent planning applications.

Other features include an interactive option for householders to find out whether they need planning permission for home improvement ideas, such as building a new extension, conservatory or garage.

Similar guidance is available for businesses and farmers while detailed information about building control regulations, conservation and listed buildings can also be found.

Users can also follow the progress of individual applications via a novel tracking function. Guidance is also available for people seeking public entertainment, hackney cab and other licences.

West Dorset council's principal planning officer Andrew Martin said: "Public comments and consultation are an important part of the planning application process. The site's online comments feature has the benefit of making it easier and more convenient than ever before for people to have their say about developments that may affect them or their neighbourhood."

The website, the first of its kind in the South West, was launched last month as part of a joint partnership between the district council, Dorset County Council and Salisbury District Council.

It is part of a £350,000 government-backed initiative to make planning and licensing services more accessible, open and easy to use.

Future plans for the online service include submission of planning, licensing and building control applications as well as an interactive online advice surgery.
