WHEN celebrity gastronaut Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall turned up as a customer for the first village market at Bothenhampton on Saturday there was very little left to buy.
Organiser Anita de Greeff said the village hall was swamped when the event opened.
"You couldn't even get into the hall to start with," she said, adding that virtually all stallholders sold their produce by the end of the morning.
"It was wonderful," she said. "I was so relieved because I was very cautious. When you decide to do something a new, especially in a village, if can be very difficult.
"It was well supported, not just by village people but others as well. There was a real community feel to it."
An added bonus was that £143 was raised for the hall from a raffle and a 50-50 stall.
The event was so successful that plans to hold it on the fourth Saturday of every month will now go ahead. The next Bothenhampton Village Market is on May 24.
