TERRY Collin, the Bridport News sports editor who died in October last year, was the embodiment of high standards and fair play. His knowledge of, and love for, sport won him a reputation of the highest quality.

He was the man we all trusted, the journalist from whom the sporting fraternity of the area expected, and got, a fair deal.

He had a great passion for sport, and he greatly admired all who worked for its wellbeing and development. Terry recognised and applauded those who brought credit to it as performers and administrators.

Every week, his dedication and caring attitude shone through his copy, and this was his tribute to the people he so admired, the devotees from all walks of life who helped to nurture his beloved sport.

Now the News intends to honour Terry's memory by donating a trophy, to be presented annually, for services to sport in any capacity in the West Dorset area.

We invite written recommendations from clubs and groups for consideration by an independent panel of judges.

All the nominees will be featured in the columns of this newspaper in the run-up to the presentation evening, which we hope to stage in December.

Editor Margery Hookings said: "The News staff, particularly those who worked closely with Terry, are delighted that his name will live on through the competition.

"We know that honouring, in his name, someone working for sport would have given him an enormous sense of satisfaction."

Nominations should be submitted to the editor, Bridport News, 67 East Street, Bridport.

We want to know, in no more than 300 words, who the person is and what group they represent, why they deserve the Terry Collin trophy and a contact name and telephone number. Only one nomination per club or group will be considered. There is also be a section for young people's sporting organisations. Please get your nominations in as soon as possible.
