WEST Hants Ladies reaped revenge for missing out of Division One South West top spot last summer as they trounced reigning group winners Bath University.

After demolishing Caversham 6-0 in their first National Club League fixture of this season, West Hants moved to the top of the pile following their convincing 5-1 win against the highly-rated students.

In a match which could prove crucial to the final group placings, the Dorset ladies got off to a flyer winning three of their four singles battles.

Kate Warne-Holland was at the top of her game as she easily dispossessed of former Scotland number one Nicola Payne 6-2, 6-1 while sisters Anna and Jane White also clinched straight sets wins.

Despite a shaky start, Anna hit back to see off Heather Matthews 6-4, 6-0 while Jane dropped just five games in defeating Katie Miles 6-3, 6-2 at number three.

Youngster Chrissie Birtchnell endured a marathon two-and-a-half hour battle before narrowly losing out to Frances Hearn 7-5 in the third set.

With the comfort of a 3-1 advantage, Warne-Holland and Anna White paired up in the doubles, destroying the Bath number ones 6-0. 6-0.

And following a rollercoaster three-setter, Jane White and Tamsin Wainwright wrapped up the win edging their doubles 7-6 in the deciding set.

The ladies will be hoping to maintain their 100 per cent record when they visit David Lloyd, Bristol, in the next round on Sunday, May 11.

West Hants Men got their Division One South campaign off to a flying start with a 5-1 annihilation of Hampshire Tennis and Health Club.

Number one David Sanger led the way as he comfortably saw off Blake Hutchins 7-5, 6-4 while Matt Sanger and Andy Phillips followed suit with 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-4 wins over Heiner Wirtz-Field and Patrick Connolly respectively.

Pete Shaw missed out in a tough three-setter with Dave Gaterell.

But that did little to hinder West Hants' prospects as Matt Sanger and Phillips combined for a 6-0, 6-3 doubles success before Dave Sanger and Shaw completed the rout with a hard-fought 6-4 final set victory over Hutchins and Gaterell.

West Hants continue their season at home to Winchester on Sunday, May 11.
