A MAN was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after he was hit by a car in Weymouth.
A section of Dorchester Road was closed for four hours yesterday afternoon, causing traffic chaos, following the collision.
The Dorset Air Ambulance landed on the road at Redlands to take the man to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester where he is now in intensive care.
Police said the man, from Weymouth, was hit by a white Ford Sierra at the junction with Lancaster Road.
A hospital spokesman said: "The man is in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit."
Police said the collision caused long tailbacks in each direction.
Rush hour traffic was at a standstill and many motorists queued for more than two hours.
