HAMWORTHY UNITED 2 WEYMOUTH SPORTS 4 SPORTS boss Adie Chance hailed his side as "absolute heroes" after they turned the form book upside down at the County Ground last night to save themselves from relegation and put the Hammers' title hopes on hold.

"Everyone was brilliant and really worked their socks off," said Chance after a shock win which left Swanage and Herston occupying bottom spot in the Dorset Premier League.

"I don't know if they took us a bit too lightly but our plan was to attack them from the start and it paid off.

"I always thought we could get the point we needed, but to do what we did last night was absolutely tremendous. There was nothing scrappy about the win, we thoroughly deserved it."

Paul Cole put battling Sports in front after 15 minutes when some neat build up put him in on the left hand side of the box and he turned to hit a tremendous shot into the far bottom corner.

But Hammers equalised when Steve Alcock allowed an overhit through pass to run back towards keeper Robbie Marquis and a dodgy bounce saw the ball set up nicely for an in-rushing home striker.

Sports hit straight back to take the lead again when Rob Horton volleyed in at the near post but then they came under a bombardment of set-piece attacks.

When the Hammers had a penalty appeal turned down following one goalmouth scramble, Sports broke out to force a corner and Dave Diaz flicked in a header to make it 3-1 seconds before the break.

"I knew they would come at us strongly after the interval but we weathered the storm well for nearly half an hour," said Chance.

When the Hammers made it 3-2 from a penalty awarded for a foul, Chance's side faced a tricky last quarter of an hour.

But they resisted everything the Hammers could throw at them and Chance admitted it was a huge relief when they broke away again for Jason Pearce to convert a one-on-one opportunity in the 90th minute.

"Now we can have a say in the championship and do Hamworthy a favour by beating the leaders Gillingham in our last game next Tuesday," said Chance.
