BRIDPORT people will be going back to the days of courtly love with a medieval valentine's ball next year.

It will be the first event to be held to celebrate the 750th year since the granting of the town's royal charter. And the group organising it says there is no excuse not to dress up - because there are patterns and fabric at the town's Livingstone Textiles.

Bridport Charter Group secretary Sophie Hunt pointed out: "You will be able to use your costume throughout the year for all the medieval occasions during 2003."

The valentine's night at Freshwater is among a variety of events being co-ordinated by the group to mark the special anniversary.

The main attraction will be the special charter events and medieval festival at Asker Meadows from July 4 to 6.

People and businesses are being asked to sponsor one of the jousting knights. And rope and stakes are being sought so that the site can be marked out. People will also be needed to help set up the arena and man the site and the park and ride from Melplash Show ground.

The charter group is totally voluntary, with support from the town council and museum. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30pm in the Marriage Room at Mountfield. All are welcome to attend.

"This is Bridport's big year and we want to make it the best it can be," said Sophie.
