THE future of Dorset comes under the spotlight at a conference to be held at Kingston Maurward College, near Dorchester, on Monday, October 14.

The State of Dorset debate, organised by Dorset County Council, will include presentations by councillors, officers and representatives of organisations such as the health authority.

The one-day session is aimed at forging a better future for Dorset with different groups working together and thinking about how they can improve the lot of the average man. County council leader Tim Palmer is due to welcome delegates before chief executive David Jenkins gives an overview of key issues in the county.

Other speakers will include the council's director of resources Peter Lewis and Alan Breakwell, chief executive of East Dorset District Council.

A council spokesman said: "The emphasis is on the opportunity for the county council to listen to the views of partner organisations.

"Participants are encouraged to consider their roles as representatives of the people of Dorset and to think about the big picture during the debate."

Ian Carruthers, chief executive of Dorset and Somerset Health Authority, is lined up to tell council officials how they can help improve health care.

Ben Page, director of the MORI social research institute, will host a series of sessions with questions and workshops before priorities and plans are drawn up.
