AN angry crowd gathered at Bournemouth magistrates court for the first appearance of the man accused of murdering homeless David Scott.

They hurled abuse at 35-year-old Lee Penfold during his brief appearance before the bench yesterday morning.

Magistrates warned they would clear the court as the group crowded around the dock but they left the building peacefully.

Penfold, also homeless, is alleged to have attacked Mr Scott in Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth in the early hours of Friday morning.

Mr Scott, 38, was rushed to hospital following an incident in the doorway of Oddbins off-licence but died later the same day in Poole Hospital.

Penfold spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth during the five-minute hearing.

And he listened as one charge was read to him, one of murdering David Scott on September 13.

The case was committed to Winchester Crown Court where Penfold will appear for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday September 24. He was remanded in custody for seven days.
