A LARGE number of motorists have applied for special eastbound passes to avoid long diversions when the Chideock and Morcombelake A35 roadworks get under way at the end of this month.

Road operators Connect said this week that they were currently assessing the requests - but they warned that by no means everyone would be lucky.

The roadworks are expected to last for at least 12 weeks and priority will be given to westbound traffic. Most vehicles heading towards Bridport from the Lyme Regis side will be diverted via Honiton and the A303 - an extra 35 miles.

But special passes will allow a limited number of eastbound vehicles through at certain times.

Connect stress that only a limited number are available and that they will be awarded to those "most directly affected by the work". They will be sent out by first class post to successful applicants from the end of next week.
