THE woman fighting for her life in hospital after a three-car smash is writer Rosemary Ellerbeck.

The author, who is in her 60s and writes under the name of Nicola Thorne, was seriously injured after the A35 collision between Bridport and Chideock.

She was airlifted to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester by air ambulance and a hospital spokesman said: "She is improving in the intensive care unit." A Plymouth man in his 40s was also seriously hurt in the accident on Tuesday. He is now thought to be stable.

The author, who recently moved to Chideock, is known locally for her book on West Dorset murderess Martha Brown, who was hanged for killing her husband in 1856.

Police said the accident near the Old London Inn on the A35 road caused traffic chaos.
