LAURA Carr and Nikki Hamblin, Dorchester Athletic Club's National Schools' Champions, added more titles to their growing collections when they represented Dorset at the South of England Inter-Counties Championships Under-15 at Barnet Copthall.

Despite throwing into a stiff wind Laura launched her javelin to over 30m in each of her four throws, the best an outstanding throw of 33.03m which set a new club record and achieved national standard and AAAs Grade One.

Laura then represented her county in the discus and was close to her personal best with 24.17m, coming sixth and scoring good points for the team.

Nikki Hamblin ran in the 1500m and left the rest of the field behind with a scorching first lap. She finished well ahead in what was for her at least, a modest time of 4:44.32.

Charlotte Watts competed in the 3K race walk gaining plaudits from officials for her excellent style. She took no less than three minutes off her personal best to take fourth place in 20:24.59.

Abbie Lawson ran one of her best races this season in the under 15 800m. She finished with an exciting last 150m to take fourth place in 2:27.32, missing a place in the final by two hundreths of a second.

The Dorchester girls made a big contribution to the Dorset under-15 girls, who placed fifth among the 18 South of England teams.

The Dorset junior men were one place better in fourth. Dorchester's Richard Beasley started well in the 1500m but had to settle for tenth after suffering breathing problems. Club-mate Dan Cree was in the points as he finished fast in the 2K steeplechase in 6:56.48.

Overall the Dorset teams finished seventh in both age groups reflecting the enormous talent and enthusiasm of the county's young athletes in competition with many of the country's strongest counties.
