THE dependable Phil Graves helped himself to 14 points as Swanage and Wareham beat Brixham 32-14 at home in the Powergen Cup first qualifying round.

Graves, Swans' experienced club captain, weighed in with a try, three conversions and one penalty as they booked a trip to Maidenhead in the competition on Saturday.

The winners of that preliminary round clash will face once-mighty Rosslyn Park in the first round proper in three weeks time.

Graves got Swans on the scoresheet in the first minute of the match at Bestwall with a penalty from 30 metres out.

He added a conversion to David Elford's 26th-minute try as Swans stormed into a 10-0 lead. Brixham bounced back with three late first-half penalties to narrow the deficit to 10-9 before they were pulled up for not releasing the ball.

And with the last kick of the half Graves slotted over the resultant penalty to put Swans 13-9 ahead.

Six minutes after the restart Graves dummied his way through Brixham's defence to score their second try, which he converted, as they stretched their lead to 20-9.

Then Robert Elford burst through Brixham's line to touch down under the posts for a try converted by Graves again.

That gave Swans a 27-9 advantage that they improved to 32-9 when Andy Welsh claimed their fourth try in the 67th minute.

Brixham replied with an 87th minute try through Dean Dorling to add to Chris Atkinson's three first-half penalties. But it was too little, too late for the Devonians and it is Swans who visit Maidenhead in three days' time.

Maidenhead beat Gordano 38-7 in their qualifying round tie.

Ellingham and Ringwood have strengthened their squad with the signing of wing forward Simon Haines, who has previously played for Portcastrian.

Promoted from Hampshire League Division Three at the end of last season, Ellingham are looking forward to the challenge of Division Two rugby.

First 15 captain Martin Chaldecott said: "Our first priority has got to be to make sure that we are still in this division at the end of the season. But I believe we will achieve that and may well surprise a few of the more established clubs."

Ellingham and Ringwood 2nds will line up in the Hampshire League Division Two Merit Table under the leadership of new captain Paul Arnold.

Under captain Tor Rudolph, Ellingham Ladies, who reached the national cup quarter-final last season, have retained all their squad, who also won league promotion in 2001-2002.

Ellingham and Ringwood will also run under-14 and 13 sides as well as mini rugby in all age groups from under-seven to under-12. If you are interested in joining the club, contact Steve Benson on 01425 474991.
