FOUR people were taken to hospital this morning after an Army Land Rover slewed across the road and collided with an ambulance service van in Dorchester.

The Land Rover was transporting soldiers from Blandford when it skidded across the road near Grey's Bridge, hit a Dorset Ambulance Service maintenance van and both vehicles went into a field.

The road was blocked for several hours while soldiers were freed from the wreckage of the Land Rover, which ended up on its side in the field. Four of the soldiers were taken to Dorset County Hospital and three Army vehicles arrived to pick up the rest.

The ambulance van's driver, who comes from Poole, was unhurt after the accident, which happened at 7.40am today after a night of heavy rainfall.

The policeman at the scene, PC Terry Swain, said he believed that the four men who were taken to hospital had suffered minor injuries.

Any witnesses to the accident should contact Dorchester Police on (01305) 251212.
