JAMIE Moores grabbed a late winner for Wimborne Town in a 2-1 victory over Eastleigh at Cuthbury in a result which hugely flattered the visitors as the Magpies continued their recent impressive run of form.

Wimborne, who recently turned over Andover away to complete the double over the current Wessex League champions have suddenly hit the kind of form that has made people sit up and take notice, but manager Alex Pike is not getting too carried away.

"If Eastleigh had been an injured animal and we had a vet on site they would have been put down at half-time," said Pike.

"We would love to go on a run now, and we know that if we can do that we will be there or there abouts at the end of the season, and that's all I can ask at this stage.

"But to be quite honest I would have to say the title is probably going to be between Fleet, Andover and Gosport, with Lymington and ourselves as outsiders."

Pike's side had to come back from a goal down to eventually turn the game in their favour which was quite staggering given the chances the Magpies enjoyed before the visitors took the lead.

The game was only five minutes old and Wimborne could have been three goals to the good with Jamie Sturgess, Aaron Turner and Scott Cannie all going close to scoring.

Sturgess was denied by a good save from Andy Smith in the Eastleigh goal, before Kevin Gill had yet another chance of securing the opening goal after a pacy run ended with his left foot effort screaming inches past the wrong side of the post.

The Magpies seemed to be carving out chance after chance at will and after another effort from Moores flew wide Gill once again tried his luck but his close range shot was blocked on the line.

It wasn't until just before the half-hour mark that the visitors created their first effort of their own on the Wimborne goal when a brilliant cross from Dean Platt was met by an equally excellent volley from Craig McAllister as his effort missed the target by a whisker.

It proved to be an early warning sign as McAllister raced on to a long ball out of defence before striking the ball under the body of Geoff Sim in the Magpies goal to give the visitors a shock lead.

Wimborne quickly went back to the other end and Tony White produced a firm header only to see Smith tip the ball onto the foot of the post and out to safety.

The relentless attacking play from Pike's side was soon to be rewarded shortly after the break when Turner was put through from midfield before he let fly with a well struck right foot shot to level matters.

Less than sixty seconds later Moores thumped a glorious effort towards the visitors' goal which flashed inches past the post.

Despite a convincing and almost totally dominant performance from the Magpies, it looked as though time was running out for a winner but, with just four minutes of the match remaining, Turner and Andy Barham were involv-ed in one of the best moves of the match ending with Moores striking home a much deserved goal for him and a deserved winner for Wimborne.
