Dorchester soccer fans Joseph and Christopher McHale became brothers in arms with their hero Duncan Ferguson before a top match.

The pair rubbed shoulders with the Everton striker before the Merseyside team's Premiership clash with Spurs at Goodison Park.

Student Christopher, 21, accompanied nine-year-old Joseph when he was mascot at the game.

Christopher, who is studying at university in Liverpool, said: "It was amazing and it still hasn't sunk in.

"We met the players and went in the changing room before the game. It was brilliant."

Joseph, who goes to St Osmund's Middle School in Dorchester, starred in front of millions when he led his heroes out live on Sky television for the game, which ended 1-1. He lives with mum Carol, dad Stephen and brothers Daniel, 16, and Christopher in St George's Road.

The pair met other players including Paul Gascoigne as well as manager Walter Smith during the evening.

The team signed shirts and Joseph was presented with a kit, while mum Carol and the rest of the family watched from the stands.

Christopher, who has a summer job at Tesco, added: "The players were great.

"I couldn't believe how down to earth they were. I even talked to Gazza about cricket."

Mrs McHale, who works as a childminder, said: "I think they're still shellshocked.

"They had a great time, although I think they found it strange to be standing next to their idols who were so normal.

"Everton did them proud and there should be a photo on its way from the club."

The club invited Joseph to be mascot after letting him down when they promised he could do the honours before a friendly match against Yeovil.
