BUILDING work on Weymouth College's new campus is due to be completed in time for the start of the next term.

Three new blocks have been built at Cranford Avenue as part of a £13 million redevelopment project for a single-site campus.

And as the work comes to an end, the doors are set to open to students at the start of the next academic year in September.

The new purpose-built buildings will provide state-of-the-art accommodation for courses in engineering, construction, art and design, hairdressing and beauty, performing arts and media.

There will also be a new cafeteria, social lounge and support services for college students, as well as a public restaurant and conference facilities for guests.

Weymouth College was previously split into two sites, but in June staff and students marked the end of an era when they bid farewell to the Newstead Road campus, which will be demolished to make way for 120 new houses after 90 years as an education facility.

But they are now getting ready to move into the new buildings, which are part of plans to create a college fit for the 21st century.

Acting principal, Malcolm Jacobs, said: "During the summer break, the college has been on the move as furniture, equipment and materials have been transported from Newstead Road to Cranford Avenue ready for the start of the new academic year.

"Many staff have been working tirelessly with the removal companies to make certain that everything is ready on time as the contractor puts the finishing touches to the new buildings.

"Our students are in for a very pleasant surprise when they come into college to commence their studies in purpose-built and refurbished accommodation and to enjoy the superb social facilities now available at the new college."

Existing buildings have been refurbished and a new ICT centre has been launched as part of the multi-million pound project.

Further improvements, due to be completed by April 2002, include an extended learning and study centre and new accommodation for the Jelly Babies Day Centre.
