IT is an event that will require extreme levels of skill, strength and stamina but Daniel Whapples is not worried - he's got time on his side.

The 21-year-old student from Broadstone is the youngest competitor lining up for the Poole Audi Hex-treme competition on September 2.

He will join 29 other athletes to battle it out over six disciplines - rowing, sailing, windsurfing, swimming, cycling and running.

The event is completely new and Daniel is thrilled to be a part of it.

The yacht manufacturing and surveying student saw an advert for the gruelling contest in a parish magazine a month ago. Relishing the challenge the keen athlete instantly applied.

"Just by chance I was reading our local magazine and saw the event advertised," said Daniel.

"I have been involved in sports all my life and Hex-treme combined everything that I enjoy, so I thought I would give it a go."

Yet although Daniel has trained to compete in national swimming events, has been sailing since he was young and is a keen runner and mountain bike racer - there are a couple of sports he is yet to try.

Over two weeks the Poole Yacht Club member must convert his rowing skills from the gym out on to the water and brush up on the windsurfing board with some tips from friends.

"I am hoping I have got a good range of ability throughout all of the events," he said.

"I am nervous but I am trying just to concentrate on training at the moment."

Although this new competition is a step into the unknown for Daniel he is quietly confident of his chances.

He appreciates he has weaknesses but hopes his strengths will help to sail him through to a historic victory.
