ANDY Toomer's early goal for BAE Systems SSC proved decisive when they emerged 1-0 winners against Brunswick Hotel in the Actionline Property Maintenance Sponsored M A Hart Lawrence A Brivati Cup Final at Hurn Bridge on Wednesday night.

Within two minutes of the start an ambitious call from Brunswick goalkeeper Alex Crawford caused central defender Barclay Hoare to let the ball run. The BAE forwards were on it in a flash and, although the Brunswick defence managed to block the first effort on goal, the ball came to Toomer who calmly stroked it into the empty net.

Brunswick went immediately down the other end, forcing a frantic scramble in the BAE penalty area before the ball was eventually cleared then Crawford atoned for his earlier error by diving bravely at the feet of Damian Cheater when he threatened to increase BAE's lead.

Brunswick began to put some promising passing movements together midway through the first half and, when an inviting cross came in from the right, Kevin Wright flashed a header just wide of the far post.

Lively Brunswick midfielder Danny Holmes did have the ball in the net in the 32nd minute but the whistle had already gone for offside.

Holmes whipped another dangerous ball in from the right three minutes later with Wright tantalisingly close to getting on the end of it before another defensive lapse by Brunswick almost gifted BAE a second goal.

Keith Birtwhistle was caught in possession in his own half by BAE's Mike Francis who raced clear with only Crawford to beat but the Bruns-wick 'keeper managed to deflect Francis' lob over the bar for a corner.

Brunswick's leading marksman Wright had a goalbound header clear-ed off the line in the 40th minute and mounting pressure in the form of a succession of corner kicks was finally reliev-ed by Steve Middleton who took a knock in the process.

A long ball out of defence was headed down by Wright for Holmes to take in his stride but BAE 'keeper Rob Renyard was perfectly positioned to save Holmes' shot.

BAE went on the offensive at the start of the second half and a long range shot was well taken by Crawford.

The Brunswick keeper then dived to save a cracking 30-yard shot from Toomer and had to scramble to block a follow up effort from Jason Gibson.

It was BAE's goalkeeper Renyard turn to take the applause midway through the second half, saving spectacularly when first Paul Bartlett and then Wright let rip from close range in an incredible goalmouth melee.

Going into the last 10 minutes, a promising BAE attack was halted by another timely interception by Barclay Hoare and there was more defending to be done when Toomer burst through down the left.

Brunswick were putting some dangerous crosses into the BAE penalty area in the closing stages and a Rob Sprague header was tipped over the bar by the impressive Renyard whose handling was superb throughout the game.

The Trophyman Man of the Match Award was presented to BAE Systems goalkeeper Rob Renyard by ex-Cherries, West Ham, Blackburn and Charlton star Matty Holmes on behalf of Matchday sponsors.
