CONFIDENT Weymouth booked a place in today's third round draw following this 2-0 FA Trophy second round win over Ryman League Premier Division outfit Hitchin Town. But the Terras left it late to kill off their ten-man opponents and had two strikes in the last 13 minutes from the impressive Mark Robinson and David Laws to thank for earning them a deserved passage through. However the margin of victory should have been much wider than it was as the hosts wasted a number of golden opportunities to clinch the win earlier than they did during a rip-roaring second period. And the main guilty party was striker Darran Rowbotham who had a day at the office he would probably rather forget. The former Exeter City man first had a spot-kick, awarded after Hitchin defender Ian Scott was shown red for handling on the line, well-saved by the superb Canaries keeper Darren Bonfield. And just moments later Rowbotham then somehow sliced wide from close range with seemingly all the time in the world to find the net. But to Weymouth's credit they kept plugging away and were rewarded for their patient build-ups and crisp passing with Robinson's 77th minute strike and from that moment there was only going to be one winner. In the opening quarter of an hour it seemed like the hosts would run away with it as they confidently stroked the ball around and Bonfield had to at his best to deny Rowbotham on eight minutes. Laws then ended a neat move after 14 minutes involving Matthew Hale, Simon Browne, who looks to have found his home in the centre of midfield, and Rowbotham by powerfully blasting a first time effort over from the edge of the box. Just seconds later Hale did well to beat Rob Kean and whip in a looping cross which was met by a bullet header from Rowbotham, but the giant Bonfield acrobatically tipped over. The remainder of the half was a scrappy affair with chances at either end limited. Terras keeper Danny Potter, who was rarely troubled, did well to claw away Jon Bone's hanging cross when under pressure from Stuart Beevor and Mark Gammon had a speculative volley from distance go wide. After the interval though things hotted up and within four minutes of the restart Weymouth thought they were about to go one-up. Gary Funnell's tricky free- kick into the near post from the right-flank skipped past a clutch of players to Rowbotham, who nodded goalwards only to see a combination of Bonfield and the crossbar keep it out. And with the ball then bouncing around on the line and seemingly about to enter the net defender Scott scooped it away with his arm. But the Terras penalty jinx continued as Bonfield brilliantly turned away Rowbotham's resulting spot- kick. And the striker's misery was compounded just seconds later when he wildly sliced wide when unmarked with just the keeper to beat. Hitchin's Carl William's shot tamely wide on 65 minutes on a rare Canaries attack before super-sub Martin Underhay was introduced to proceedings by Mason four minutes later. The hosts were finding life difficult against ten men but the pace of Underhay immediately caused the Hitchin backline problems but the livewire striker's control let him down when he burst through and was bearing down on goal. Cliff Akruang had a decent opening on 74 minutes for the visitors but his curling right-footed effort from 12- yards went narrowly wide. Moments later and with home fans preparing to dust down their Hertfordshire A- to-Zs, Weymouth broke on a quick counter-attack which began with Underhay bombing down the left. He crossed to Rowbotham, who in-turn tried to flick it through but the ball took a deflection and broke to Robinson. The in-form midfielder didn't need a second invitation and he drilled it low across Bonfield into the bottom right-hand corner. Gaps then started to appear in Hitchin's defence and in the closing stages chances started to come thick and fast for the home side. Underhay turned home Rowbotham's downward header only to see the linesman's flag rule him offside, Laws had a header well stopped and Rowbotham cracked a swerving effort which went inches over. And in the third minute of stoppage time Laws was able to seal the win with a finish of the highest order. The striker played a one- two with Hale on the left- flank before cutting inside and curling a low shot into Bonfield's left-hand corner from 20 yards out.
