Dorchester'S senior citizens should be sitting comfortably after this year's mayoral appeal.

Town mayor Stella Jones hopes to raise hundreds of pounds to provide more seats and benches for the town's older population.

And she is urging Dorset Echo readers to back the appeal, which she launched today.

She said: "It has been the custom for many years for the Mayor of Dorchester to do something special at this time of year for our senior citizens.

"Many older people have expressed their concern to me about the lack of public seats. These are most appreciated by older people when they are out walking.

"When I was last mayor in 1988, I purchased extra seats with my Christmas appeal and these have been well used. More are needed, especially for those living on the outskirts of town and I would like to provide these - with the public's assistance.

"I am responding to what I think are the concerns and views of the many elderly people who have spoken to me. This appeal will help all senior citizens as they go around Dorchester. Day after day, month after month, year after year, the seats will give benefit and pleasure."

Coun Jones urged local people, businesses and organisations to donate as much money as possible to the appeal and said all donations no matter how large or small would be gratefully received.

"I would also welcome views as to where seats are needed. Indeed if anyone wants to dedicate one in a place which is special to them or their business, we can talk about it further," she added.

nCash or cheques - made payable to the Mayor's Appeal Fund should be sent to the Mayor's Parlour, 19 North Square, Dorchester, DT1 1JF.
